How to Pack a Bathroom for Moving

Packing up the different rooms can sometimes be stressful or hectic when working on a move. Heroes Moving and Storage has put together a few steps for how to pack a bathroom for moving. It can be thought of as a simple task – just throw everything into a box, and you’re done. Well, that is not exactly how it goes. To be productive in this process, there should be some sorting, purging, and organizing involved before getting to the packing part.

Bathroom Packing List

It really comes down to three main things when packing a bathroom: sorting, purging, and organizing. Follow our bathroom packing list below. 

Step 1: Sort Your Stuff

Sorting is a great step to see exactly what you have and what you need to bring with you during the move. This can be done by sorting through your items and putting them into categories:

• Appliances and accessories
• Cosmetics
• Feminine and paper products
• Hair products
• Toiletries
• Medicines
• Towels and linens
• Cleaning supplies and miscellaneous chemicals

Step 2: Purge the Unnecessary Items

This step will allow you to get rid of the extra stuff that you won’t need during the move or in your new home. For example, those empty or almost empty product bottles. Those can go in the trash or marry them into new bottles so that no product is wasted. 

Appliance and Accessories

Do you look at your bin of hair appliances and see multiple curling irons or blow dryers? Well, take an inventory and purge any extra tools. Test them out, see which ones work best, and narrow them out. Pack what you need and either give away or trash the rest. 

Cosmetics

Go through all your products and throw away anything old, dried out, broken, or rarely used. Many cosmetics have an expiration after the first use, so also throw away any expired products. 

Paper and Feminine Products

These items are easy to move and even ship because of how light they are. You don’t have to throw them away, but keeping them away from moisture is important. 

Hair Products and Toiletries

Throw away the empty bottles or products you never use. It may seem like a waste, but some moving companies charge by weight, so getting rid of excess weight will save you money. 

If you have a large supply of unopened products like shampoo and other products, then research how much it would be to ship the products if needed. Donating the products to homeless or women’s shelters is also a great idea.

Medicine

Moving is the perfect time to clear out any clutter in your medicine cabinet. It is important to safely dispose of any medications you aren’t keeping.

Reasons to get rid of medicines:

• It’s expired
• The label is illegible or not present
• It’s ineffective
• The physical appearance or smell has changer
• The medicine is no longer needed, or the treatment is completed 

Per the FDA, medicines that could be harmful to others should be flushed down the toilet rather than thrown in the trash. You can also find a local drug take-back program by checking with your local law enforcement.

Towels and Linens

Any towels, linens, curtains, or any other bathroom fabrics that have holes, rips, or stains, should be thrown away. You can also repurpose them and use towels or linens to clean your house or as cushioning when you pack. 

Cleaning Supplies

Sort through all your cleaning supplies and get rid of any products that you can’t identify or travel with. Some chemicals can be dangerous when they are mixed. Even some toxic gasses can be released. 

Step 3: Pack It Up

The first thing to do when packing a bathroom is to pack an essentials bag of any toiletries you may need:

• Toothbrush
• Hair products, including shampoo, conditioner, and daily hair care
• Deodorant
• Makeup
• Anything else that you might need on a daily basis

How to Pack Toiletries:

• Wrap any unopened bottles containing liquid with plastic wrap or bags.
• Line boxes containing appliances and accessories, hair products, and toiletries with towels.
• Wrap any fragile items in towels to protect them during the move and label the boxes as fragile.
• Pack unused towels on the top of heavier boxes. They take up space without adding more weight.
• Label all boxes clearly. 

After packing your toiletries, ensure you box or otherwise pack all other bathroom items that you will be moving. Remember to leave out a roll of toilet paper, soap, and disposable hand towels to use on moving day.
